Shouldn't Everyone Speak French?

Whatever language you want, Rayanna

I know, the clarinet is for Tylor, but I just can't resist picking it up. I'm currently practicing 'One Tin Soldier' as requested by Lisa. But the other day, I was going through a rousing round of 'Dites-Moi' from the Rogers and Hammerstein musical South Pacific.

So Rayanna, recognizing the melody, chimed in, singing, "Dites-moi pourquoi la vie est belle...." Brittany chastised her, "Stop that! Those aren't even words!"

Lisa and I shared a grin before she told her that they were indeed words, they just weren't English words. Well, I was pretty pleased with Rayanna for remembering, and somewhat surprised that Brittany didn't remember that in her younger days, about Rayanna's age, actually, she used to answer me "Ja" and "Nein," after I had deluged her with German for several months. Rayanna's also picking up a fair amount of Spanish from watching Dora and Dragon Tales. Perhaps I let Brittany down not keeping up with the German. It's good to know another language, and Rayanna might have a good running start here. Need to encourage her. From time to time, I talk to the kids in either French, Italian, Spanish, German, and occasionally Russian or Japanese, but it's nothing serious.

Maybe I should take it more seriously. Besides, French could come in very handy if we make that trip to Paris. The first time I was in France, I knew hardly a word, and that makes for a problem when you're trying to find a restroom!

For reference, the lyrics are:

Dites-moi pourquoi la vie est belle.
Dites-moi pourquoi la vie est gai.
Dites-moi pourquoi, chere mad'moiselle,
Est-ce que parce que vous m'aimez?
